BUSINESS FAILURE: Estimated that 30% of business
failures are directly related to employee theft.
EMPLOYEE THEFT: 33% of employees admit to stealing
a product or money from jobs in the last three years.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce estimates dishonesty
by employees costs 1/2% to 3% of gross sales.
JUST PLAIN LIES: FALSIFIED EMPLOYMENT APPLICATIONS
& RESUMES Applicants tend to stretch the truth.
Statistics reveal that 40% of applications are falsified!
Nearly one-half of those applications contain "bridging"
whereby dates of employment are inaccurate and overlapping
to cover-up the applicants past.
NEGLIGENT HIRING LAWSUITS: A legal theory under
which employers can be held responsible for injuries
caused by their employees if it can be shown that
they failed to make reasonable inquiries into the
employees background and suitability for employment.
Most negligent hiring lawsuits maintain that the employer
failed to conduct appropriate research into the background
of the applicant such as reference checks, criminal
convictions research and other background information
that would have disclosed the employees past
misconduct. An employer may be found liable
for negligent hiring when an employee causes harm
to a coworker, customer or member of the general public--
whether or not the employee is acting within the scope
of his/her job duties.

SUBSTANCE ABUSE: Approximately 10 percent of
America's workforce, some 14.9 million full and part-time
employees, regularly abuse or are dependent on alcohol
or drugs, according to the 2003 National Survey on
Drug Use and Health released by the Substance Abuse
and Mental Health Services Administration. According
to a SAMSHA news release, "The survey found that
of the 19.4 million adults (age 18 and over) characterized
with abuse of or dependence on alcohol or drugs (19.4
million) in 2003, 14.9 million (77 percent) were employed
either full or part time. This amounts to over ten
percent of full-time workers as well as over ten percent
of part-time workers."
WORKPLACE VIOLENCE: According to the National
Institute for Occupational Health and Safety, there
are over 6 million threats of violence and 2 million
workplace assaults each year. 13 people due as a result
of workplace violence every week.
